Happy Valentine's Day!

Even to the most cynical of us, there is a charm in the sweetness which is Valentine's Day. I didn't always feel this way, in fact I think that the holiday can be super cheesy at times, but when I put my cynical self aside, my spirits are lifted.

Browsing Pinterest it is amazing to see the amount of effort some crafty parents, along with their kids, put in to making gifts for friends and classmates.

One of the most simple decorations for the day uses yarn: sweet yarn wrapped hearts.  A little cardboard, a bit of tape, and about a yard of red yarn allow the little ones to say: "look what I  made!!"

An hour crafting with kids and grandkids is absolutely the best way to spend quality time with them. (Remember here?).  What I love more than anything is the chats we have while we work away. Oh my, the information you can get in that quiet time!!

I guess yarn, hearts and kids are quite popular, I found two more examples below.

During the month of February, just because, I'll be putting in a cute red Ultrasuede® heart in every package sent out to you, my fellow Valentines.

Ultrasuede® is Ultra Cool

When you find something that works, you stick with it. Ultrasuede® is something that I love and that I can certainly attest to being one of the greatest fibers of today.

When something needs to be crafted for durability and softness, it's the first material I look for.  Having a fabric that is not only stain resistant but also comfortable - amazing! Could you imagine spilling red wine on your dress and not feeling like the world is coming to an end?  I love the freedom that you get with wearing this miracle fabric!

Another fantastic benefit of Ultrasuede® is the vegan-friendly aspect.  You get to wear all of the latest fashion trends without skipping a beat! Halston, Cynthia Rowley, and other high fashion designers have gotten rave reviews while using the material for outerwear in their collections. I've gotten creative and used Ultrasuede® in some of my tassel designs and love the movement and softness of it.

I think everyone needs some Ultrasuede® in their life, don't you?

PS - back in 2008 TORAY, the company that manufacturers Ultrasuede®, asked me to contribute to their fashion catalog: how are designers using Ultrasuede®?  It was a great honor to be included among some prominent designers.  I contributed my choker, which is an intricate needlepoint piece embellished with beads, pearls and backed with none other than lovely Ultrasuede®. The second piece was what we called a "waistlet", i.e. a string of beads pearls and Ultrasuede®, and ending in tassels made of...  you guessed it, Ultrasuede®!!

Anyway, this is where we are today.  We leave in a few hours for Baltimore where we will be staying with Shiri and family and taking my aunt Bella sight-seeing.  Back on Thursday!

Smooth as Silk

Close up of a finished Shibori Silk Scarf

Of all the threads I love to use, the best, beyond a doubt, is silk. Cotton can get pretty good, but nothing is even remotely as easy and luxurious to use as silk thread! Yum!  Silk production is older than anything I can think of--estimates put it between 7000 BC and 3000 BC. It was at first only used to adorn the royalty of China, where it's cultivation began. It soon popped up on musical instruments, fishing lines, paper and a very strong flexible glue. For a time it even became the sole means of currency in China--imagine being paid in silk each week?
Silk Ties

By 330 AD silk had traveled to the western world, and the rest is, actually, history. Silk owes it's high price to the lengthy process used to create it, which is actually a little, Ew, Ick. But we are adults and we love our silk, so:  the little silkworm spins it's silken cocoon around itself, ready to make it's change. Silk makers then gather thousands and thousand of these cocoons and boil them. The boiling process allows the threads of the cocoon to be slowly unwound, pulled out of the vat and wound onto a spool. Alas the poor little silk worm is sacrificed, but his legacy is a strong one. The fine gauzy spooled thread it is dyed and then woven into fabric or spun to make the threads we needlepointers love so well!

Silk is an entire subculture unto itself, be it scarves or ties, sheets or ribbon, silk is the quintessential definition of luxury. The silk scarf is a complete art form unto itself, examples range from the kitschy modern handpainted scarves on Etsy to the revered and high end Pucci,  Givenchy and Bvlgari.

and then, of course, one of my favorites, Hermes.

I love the colors in these scarves, and I love silk!
